ABSTRACT:
WaterAid has initiated a research project to evaluate the effectiveness of public financing for sustainable household sanitation in Dar es Salaam. This project is part of a broader research initiative that includes case studies on rural sanitation in the state of Bihar, India, and Thailand. The objectives of the project are as follows: • To map out the institutional framework and the financing flows of the sector. • To identify the different sources of sanitation financing and determine the share of financing originating from households and public sources for different components of the sanitation ‘value chain’ (from collection to safe disposal). • To make recommendations about how public finance could be better targeted to accelerate progress towards universal access to sustainable improved sanitation.
